War veterans in Mudzi West Constituency have applauded their legislator, Honourable Knowledge Kaitano for his commitment to the refurbishment and development of the Mapereka Pereka Shrine.
The shrine, a significant historical site, serves as a powerful reminder of the liberation struggle and a symbol of the sacrifices made to achieve Zimbabwe's independence.
Speaking to this publication, war veterans in Mudzi West praised Honourable Kaitano for taking the initiative to ensure the shrine's upkeep, emphasising its importance in educating the modern generation about safeguarding the independence that came through the barrel of the gun.
Cde Mapisa, whose nom de guerre was Jealous Chigwagwa, expressed his gratitude for the legislator’s efforts in refurbishing the shrine and recognising the crucial role played by war veterans during the liberation struggle.
"Cde Kaitano has shown true leadership by not only preserving our history but also honouring the sacrifices of those who fought for this country. The refurbishment of Mapereka Pereka Shrine is a testament to his respect for the legacy of the liberation struggle," said Cde Mapisa.
Another war veteran, Cde Nyasha Muchanza, also commended Honourable Kaitano for his efforts.
Cde Muchanza, known during the war as "Ma Hands," described the state of the shrine before the refurbishment.
"Mapereka Pereka Shrine was like a desolate place, but Honourable Kaitano's intervention has transformed it. He facilitated the erection of shades, bought decorative materials, and assisted in the drilling of a borehole at the shrine. Thanks to his dedication, we were able to celebrate Heroes Day last August under much-improved and comfortable conditions," said Cde Muchanza.
Honourable Kaitano, speaking to this publication, emphasised that it is his duty as a foot soldier of President Mnangagwa to ensure that development leaves no one and no place behind.
"The refurbishment and development of Mapereka Pereka Shrine is just one of the projects I have committed to for Mudzi West. War veterans are an essential part of our nation's rich history, and they deserve our continued recognition and honour," he said.
He added that as a Zanu PF legislator, he is driven by President Mnangagwa’s mantra, "Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo" (A country is built by its own people).
"I will continue to devote my efforts to the development of the constituency, not just focussing on Mapereka Pereka Shrine but on all areas that need attention," Kaitano affirmed.
The development of Mapereka Pereka Shrine stands as a significant achievement for Mudzi West, ensuring that the legacy of the liberation struggle is preserved and honoured for generations to come.
