Government has announced a comprehensive set of measures aimed at curbing the spread of infectious diseases in response to the recent cholera outbreak that has afflicted various regions across the country.
Speaking during yesterday’s post cabinet briefing, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere outlined that among the key measures endorsed by the cabinet is the enforcement of onsite servicing in new residential areas before residents take occupancy.
“By enforcing onsite servicing in new residential areas, we aim to create a safe and healthy living environment for our citizens,” Minister Muswere emphasized.
Government has also mandated small-scale miners operating in mining areas to prioritize the provision of water and sanitation facilities within mine compounds.
“Government is going to increase access to water and sanitation facilities in mining areas as this is crucial in preventing the spread of diseases,” he said.
The Minister added that Government was also taking decisive action to stem the spread of cholera by removing unregulated mining activities along the Mazowe River.
This directive underscores Government’s commitment to elevating hygiene standards in regions where mining activities are prevalent, thus mitigating the occurrence of disease outbreaks.
Moreover, Government announced the decommissioning of Cholera Treatment Centres in areas where cases have significantly decreased stating that equipment from these centers will be redistributed to current hotspots, bolstering healthcare infrastructure and enhancing response capabilities.
“By reallocating resources to areas with heightened transmission rates, we aim to optimize our response and contain the spread of the disease,” the Minister said.
Government has also prioritized the purchase of oral cholera vaccines to administer a second dose in districts targeted during the initial vaccination campaign.
This aims to provide extended protection against cholera for up to three years, ensuring the health and safety of vulnerable populations.
“As we move forward, our focus remains on implementing effective measures to safeguard public health and mitigate the impact of infectious diseases,” further said Minister.
Through a combination of targeted interventions and proactive strategies, Government is steadfast in its commitment to curbing disease outbreaks and building a healthier, more resilient nation.
