ZANU PF popularity scares opposition parties

ZANU PF campaign machine has scared opposition parties into panic mode forcing MDC-T president, Douglas Mwonzora to reverse his decision to recall two councillors from Manyame Rural District Council.

A source who spoke to this publication said Mwonzora decided to shelf  his decision to recall Ward 1 councillor Blessing Tangwara-Werd and Ward 8 councillor Cly Tichaona Munhunepi after realising that ZANU PF was going to snatch those wards in the event of a by election.

“Mwonzora decided to reverse the recall after he was advised that the MDC-T was going to be humiliated again by ZANU PF as the ruling party has a massive support base in Manyame. The turnout of ZANU PF members during the commissioning of Mt Meru Millers Zimbabwe by (President) Mnangagwa in Mahusekwa scared Mwonzora as the majority of the attendees were reportedly from Manyame Ward 1 and 8. So to save his party from electoral embarrassment, Mwonzora decided to maintain the status quo in those wards,” said the source.

The source added that Mwonzora saw it as a waste of resources to compete with ZANU PF in a by-election in Manyame as it is a given that the ruling party would romp to victory again. According to the source, ZANU PF’s mobilisation exercise has sent shivers to opposition parties who are now jittery to face the Party in an election.

The reversal of the recall has been viewed by many as a desperate attempt by opposition parties to cling on to power.

Meanwhile, in the recent by-elections held on March 26 this year, ZANU PF managed to snatch two seats from the urban areas, despite the opposition parties claiming massive support from the same.
