The Nelson Chamisa-led MDC-Alliance formation is planning to unleash violence if its members are barred from participation at the forthcoming Extra Ordinary Congress by the Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T, Harare Post has learnt.
This came out during an MDC-Alliance Provincial Assembly meeting held at the MDC-Alliance provincial party offices in Gwanda over the past weekend.
Attendees questioned the leadership on what would happen should Dr Khupe manage to block the MDC-Alliance delegation from attending the much-awaited Congress.
Responding to the question, the MDC-Alliance Matabeleland Provincial Chairperson Solani Moyo, indicated that the MDC-Alliance youths would be tasked to respond violently thwarting such efforts.
He added that more information will be availed after the MDC-Alliance National Council that is expected to be held on 23 October, where resolutions with regards to the Congress will be made.
A close contact within the MDC-Alliance told this publication that the opposition outfit is likely to activate its militant group led by Mbare legislator Starman Chamisa, which was set up to ruthlessly deal with anyone who opposes Nelson Chamisa's leadership.
“Plans are in the works to activate the vigilante group led by Starman Chamisa if Khupe disallowed MDC-A members to participate at the extraordinary congress,” the contact said.
MDC-Alliance National Organising Secretary, Amos Chibaya recently revealed that the opposition had resolved to participate at the congress as directed by the Supreme Court following wide consultations from party members.
The Supreme Court granted Dr Khupe up to 30 November to hold the party's extraordinary Congress to elect a new president.
The Supreme Court had initially directed that an extraordinary Congress be held within 90 days of the order that was delivered on 31 March. However, health authorities blocked the party from holding the congress on 31 July due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
