Citizens applaud Government over stringent measures on drug peddlers

The citizens of Zimbabwe have commended the Government for its stance towards combating the pervasive issue of drug peddling within its borders. Citizens engaged by this publication commended Government for its commitment to safeguarding its citizens particularly the vulnerable youth demographic from the detrimental effects of illicit substances.

Speaking to this publication, a Mabvuku resident, Munyarazi Humba said, “I commend the Government’s unwavering commitment to combat the scourge of drug peddling in our society. The recent implementation of stringent measures to tackle the issue has been a significant step towards creating a safer and healthier environment for all Zimbabweans.”

Similarly, Tapiwa Musoro a resident in Hopely narrated how some of his friends were currently incarcerated at Chikurubi Maximum Prison over theft charges that were committed whilst they were intoxicated by drugs. “Drug peddling has been a persistent challenge in our communities, leading to increased crime rates, substance abuse among the youth, and the erosion of our social fabric. Recognizing the gravity of the problem, the Government has taken proactive steps to address it head-on.”

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner, Paul Nyati to this publication and revealed that, “Government launched an operation against drug and substance abuse in 2023 where a total of 6156 accused persons were arrested and prosecuted for possession of large quantities of illicit drugs and substances. Surveillance has been enhanced at all ports of entry and exit with personnel being trained in order to efficiently detect the smuggling of dangerous drugs and substances. ”

Moreover the Government, through the Ministry of Health and Child Care, has embarked on programs aimed at prioritising preventative measures to dissuade individuals, especially the youths from engaging in drug abuse. Educational campaigns, community outreach programs and youth empowerment initiatives have been launched to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs and promote healthy lifestyle choices.  Zimbabwe under the Dangerous Drugs Act makes it a criminal offence to use substances even in small quantities for personal use.
