Loadshedding is set to reduce as coal supply to Unit 7 and 8 of the Hwange Thermal Power Plant is poised to extend beyond 2023.

A reliable source within the Hwange Power Plant has disclosed that Hwange Colliery Company Limited (HCCL) is poised to extend its coal supply agreement with Hwange Electricity Supply Company (HESCO) beyond 2023.

"This extended partnership between Hwange Colliery and HESCO is a testament to our dedication to meet the country's energy demands. We foresee a seamless continuation of coal supply, ensuring stability in power generation for the foreseeable future," said the source.

In addition to this significant development, Turbo Mining has emerged as a pivotal player in bolstering the nation's energy security.

“The company has entered into an agreement to supply HESCO with coal, ensuring a surplus that will be adequate for the next coming decade. This strategic move is anticipated to alleviate the prevalent power cuts that have been a source of frustration for citizens across the country,” added the source.

The source went further to emphasize the importance of these agreements in paving the way for a more stable and reliable power supply. The source stated, "These coal supply agreements are a critical milestone in our efforts to reduce load shedding. We are committed to ensuring a consistent and secure energy supply for the prosperity of our nation."

Citizens are already expressing their gratitude towards the Government for taking proactive steps to address the persistent issue of load shedding. John Moyo, a resident of Harare, remarked, "I’ve noticed fewer power cuts lately. It’s a positive change, and I appreciate the Government’s efforts to ensure that we have a fair amount of adequate power supply.”

Grace Chisenga, another citizen, echoed similar sentiments, stating, "The fact that we are experiencing less load shedding is something to be thankful for. It makes a real difference in our daily lives.”

Despite the lack of detailed knowledge about the coal supply agreements, citizens are hopeful that the current trend of reduced load shedding will continue. The Government’s responsiveness to the needs of the people is fostering a sense of optimism, with many expressing confidence in a more stable and reliable power supply in the foreseeable future.

HESCO and Turbo Mining have committed to supplying 850,000 metric tons of coal annually for the next 25 years. This long-term commitment is expected to serve as a foundation for sustained economic growth and improved living standards. As the nation anticipates a future with reduced power cuts, these coal supply agreements mark a significant leap towards a more energy-secure future.
