Citizens hail ZUPCO for expanding public transport fleet

Zimbabwe's urban dwellers have welcomed the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company's (ZUPCO) ambitious move to augment its transport fleet.

The decision, which entails the addition of 500 buses by the end of the year, is seen as a game-changing strategy to uplift the country’s public transportation system.

In an interview with this publication, prominent social commentator, Calven Chitsunge, lauded ZUPCO's initiative to bolster its fleet with a mix of train coaches, conventional buses, and mini buses.

“This expansion reveals the Government's dedication to the National Transport Policy. Given the noticeable transport deficit in cities like Harare, and the ZRP’s recent clampdown on Commuter Omnibuses, this move by ZUPCO fills a crucial void. Places like Chitungwiza bore the brunt, with residents waiting endlessly for transportation. This strategic step by ZUPCO is pivotal in rectifying these gaps,” said Chitsunge.

The anticipated alleviation of transport shortages is not the only potential benefit. Nicholas Bakali, another seasoned analyst, believes ZUPCO’s expanded fleet will offer substantial financial relief to many Zimbabweans.

“In a cash-strapped environment, efficient public transportation can deter the race towards private car ownership, which is often financially straining. This development ensures that even those in the outskirts can enjoy effective transport services. It’s clear that the Government’s 2020 pro-poor National Transport Policy is at play here, with a focus on inclusivity and catering to the market’s glaring needs,” Bakali stated.

Bakali further elaborated on the pitfalls of the informal transport sector dominated by smaller, often unregistered vehicles such as mini-buses, motorbikes, tuk-tuks, and SUVs.

“These vehicles, apart from being mostly non-roadworthy, are not sufficient to cater for the populace's demands. ZUPCO's new fleet promises a paradigm shift, aiming to revolutionize transport in Zimbabwe, enhancing the quality of life for its citizens,” added Bakali.

Meanwhile, in a reassuring turn of events, private stakeholders in the transport sector have also expressed their willingness to collaborate with the Zimbabwean Government.

Representatives spanning from drivers, kombis, and conductors have reportedly communicated to the Government their intent to provide crucial input to ensure the smooth and effective rollout of the National Transport Policy, promising a brighter transportation future for all Zimbabweans.
